The Ion S5 System is one of Thermo Fisher Scientific's higher end models of next generation sequencers, utilizing the ion torrent superconductor technology to support a broad range of sequencing applications. The instrument has three chip options, capable of producing up to 60-80 million reads with read lengths of 200 to 400 bases and up to 15 Gb of output with analysis times between 2.5 to 16.5 hours. The Ion S5 is suitable for sequencing whole genomes, targeted gene panels, exomes, transcriptomes, metagenomes, and more. Thermo Fisher Scientific's line of Ion Torrent sequencers utilize ion semiconductor chips that contain million of microwells, each layered underneath with an ion sensor to measure changes in pH. Template DNA that are bound to beads fill each well, proceeded by flooding of individual species dNTPs. If the DNA polymerase incorporates a complementary dNTP, a hydrogen ion is released and subsequently detected, resulting in a corresponding base call. The cycling of the reads occur in parallel, allowing for accurate, high throughput sequencing.
Some research decisions can’t wait. A few hours could make all the difference in your quest for the right answer. With other light-based sequencers you could wait almost 60 hours for results. With the Ion S5 System you get results in as little as 24 hours (with a 2.5-4 hour sequencer run time and overnight Ion Chef System run).
With single-day installation, a straightforward user interface, and cartridge-loaded reagents, the Ion S5 System is easy to use. Beyond this, the system is part of a workflow that allows you to go from DNA to data with only 45 minutes of total hands-on time on the Ion Chef System and the Ion S5 System, significantly less than other targeted sequencing solutions that require as much as 2.5 hours of hands-on time. Combined with Ion AmpliSeq™ technology for target selection, the Ion Chef™ System for automated library and template preparation, and Ion Reporter™ Software for automated variant annotation, targeted sequencing becomes simpler than ever.
